Research carried out for Emmaus by PrimeTimers highlights the key issues that social enterprises involved in recycling and resale should consider if they are planning for growth. The results also provide a view into the future for those organisations that have recently started a recycling or resale enterprise. Emmaus is a charity that enables previously homeless people to regain control of their lives by providing both a home and work via a successful social enterprise model. Each Emmaus Community is an independent charity within a UK Federation and provides homeless individuals with work experience through a business run by and on behalf of their community. The social enterprises are involved in the recycling and sale of furniture, white goods, clothing and bric-a-brac. Some also offer a café experience for their customers. PrimeTimers was recently commissioned to carry out a unique piece of comparative research into the social enterprises run by 13 Emmaus Communities across England and Paris. It is not very often that comparative research is carried out in the third sector and Emmaus, keen to pass on the results to other organisations, funders and policy makers, shared the findings at a lunchtime seminar. PrimeTimers member, Dr Alan Cousens, who conducted the research, presented the results with David Chenery, Emmaus UK’s Director of Business Development. The seminar provided those engaged in, or considering, similar activities with new, evidence-based knowledge and the opportunity to ask questions. Dr Cousens also produced a summary report of the issues raised by his research that can be downloaded from this web site. Download the report .pdf 1.72MB |
