Can the British third sector learn from other countries?

The Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organizations (ACEVO) joins with us to ask: can the British third sector learn from other countries?
5.30pm, 11 February, 2008
at 1 London Bridge

Filippo Addarii, Head of International Programmes, ACEVO and Acting Director of Euclid will introduce the debate. The panel will comprise: Jim Baker, Age Concern, former Chief Executive of Connections for Development; Michael Hammer, Executive Director of OneWorld Trust; Professor Jude Howell, Director of the Centre for Civil Society, London School of Economics; and Bobby Lambert, a development consultant and former Chief Executive of RedR.

Britain is just one of the countries across the globe where there is increasing interest in the role of the third sector and its contribution to the economy and society. Lifelong learning is entrenched in the USA where there is an appetite for skills and qualifications and cross-sector careers. Are there cultural and institutional constraints in Britain that prevent the same kind of development? Can we learn from the experience of other European or Asian countries?
